English

Abstract
The changes in Iran’s socio-cultural life during the Second World War (1939–1945) mark a significant juncture in the transition from tradition to modernity. Using a historical-analytical method and relying on documentary and periodic studies, this study tried to see the ways in which the Allied occupation of Iran resulted in a redefinition of the nation’s socio-cultural structure. The main hypothesis of this research is that while the military occupation and direct connection with the foreigners constrained the political dominance, it created at the socio-cultural level a structural mobilization in educational institutions, media, and urban lifestyles. Data analysis showed that the Second World War made the ground for a new discourse on cultural modernization and the reconfiguration of social relations; a discourse in which concepts such as literacy, urban order, the role of women in society, and progress were redefined. Consequently, one sees this era as a milestone in Iran’s cultural history that accelerated the transition from tradition into modernity.

Introduction
The change of Iran’s socio-cultural life during the Second World War (1939–1945) can be considered a major juncture in the transition of Iranian society from tradition to modernity. This period offered a unique experience: occupation, famine, the presence of alienations, and a simultaneous encounter with a new world. This dualistic engagement generated a new historical consciousness in Iran regarding its global standing and the necessity of redefining cultural autonomy and identity. In other words, in this era, Iran perceived itself for the first time as an integral participant in global history. Overall, while this era was undeniably characterized by socio-political crises, from a socio-cultural perspective, it is viewed as a period of compulsory liberalization and the generation of a modern cultural identity. Iran transitioned from a centralized, closed, and governmental cultural model to an open and pluralistic one that started an international dialogue.
Most previous works have largely confined the study of World War II in Iran to a political and pejorative framework, neglecting the cultural capacities and social changes. This study is innovative in its approach and methods. Other studies have considered the war primarily as a military disaster; this research took a cultural history approach and intertextual discourse analysis, and tried to see and analyse the cultural representations of the war from diplomatic memoirs, archival records, and the contemporary Persian press. According to this framework, the war is analysed not merely as a catastrophe but as a socio-cultural process that resulted in the redefinition of modernity, cultural relationships, educational paradigms, and media patterns in Iran.

Method
Using a historical-analytical method and drawing on archival and periodic studies, this study sought to examine how the presence of the Allies in Iran led to the redefinition of Iran's socio-cultural structure. This research hypothesizes that while the military occupation and direct contact with foreigners constrained political dominance, it created, at the socio-cultural level, a structural mobilization within educational institutions, the media, and urban lifestyles. Data analysis showed that the Second World War made the ground for a new discourse on cultural modernization and the reconfiguration of social relations; a discourse in which concepts such as literacy, urban order, the role of women in society, and progress were redefined. Consequently, one sees this era as a milestone in Iran’s cultural history, accelerating the transition from tradition to modernity.

Discussion and Conclusion
This study aimed to present a picture of the cultural consequences of World War II (1939-1945). Accordingly, three primary consequences can be identified in the cultural landscape of war-torn Iran. 1) The war changed the allocation of socio-cultural roles. Before the war, cultural services were exclusive to the state. Although the war did not intend to train a new force, the weakness of the central state allowed these social forces to be mobilized and directed by expert mentors; 2) New cultural entities were created through the collaboration of Allied forces and Iranian activists. These entities played a significant role in state organization and the transformation of the social configuration of Iran; 3) New concepts, technical knowledge, and information were created by the entities, particularly through socio-cultural collaborations. These new concepts and knowledge revolutionized the Iranian intellectual and cognitive systems. The internalization of this knowledge resulted in many changes in Iranian social life and redefined the relationship among the state, society, the environment, and other societies. These new ideas and knowledge were distributed among the public through the proliferation of books and newspapers, and the development of public schools. They exerted a profound influence on people's attitudes, worldviews, and socio-political orientations.
